PROFILEBorn in Huntingdon , Cambrigdshire, Giles had his first experience of sailing at Grafham Water near his home aged 7. It wasn't longb efore he became interested in racing, after being bribed into club races with the reward of Mars bars, soon all he wanted to do was go racing. At 14, Giles got his first taste of being the best. 2001 saw him become the youngest ever Topper National Champion, a feat, from which dreams of Olympic success blossomed. After several Youth Championships learning from those around him, he won a place to represent Great Britain at the ISAF Youth World Championships where he came away with Gold in 2005. After this success came the more challenging task of making the transition into Senior Laser racing, which he did with great aplomb, achieving 7th at the Senior Laser Worlds, and being first under 21 and first rookie. Due to his size, Giles decided he was best suited to the Finn Class, to which he made the transition in 2006. With only ten months Finn training Giles finished 14th at the ISAF World Sailing Games, as well as becoming the Finn National champion. Also during this time Giles completed a degree in Geography with Geology at Southampton University gaining a BSc. Since graduating Giles has focused fully on his sailing skills and has begun to show his true potential for Olympic success with multiple ISAF World Cup Medals. These include two gold's (one of which was on the 2012 Olympic waters in Weymouth), two silvers, and Bronze medals in the overall ISAF World Cup Series as well as the 2010 Finn World Championships. |
